"Sport is about community and a sense of belonging, making friends, looking after our physical and mental health, learning amazing life skills... so PLAY ON in your own way." – Jemima Montag

When I heard Jemima say these words in her post Olympics interview (if you haven’t, I really recommend you watch it!), they struck a chord deep within me. As a young girl, I wasn’t exactly the most coordinated—gymnastics felt like defying gravity and let’s just say the ball and I had an understanding: it stayed far away from me! So I didn’t pursue sports, seeing them as something only for the naturally talented, the fast runners, and the kids who could effortlessly do a cartwheel or score a goal.  But now, as a mum, I see things differently. I want my son Alfie to experience sports not for the trophies or the wins, but for everything else that comes with it—  the joy of being part of something bigger, the sense of belonging, and yes, the fun.

The Joy of Belonging

Growing up, I missed out on more than just playing games—I missed out on being part of a team, on sharing those moments of excitement, and on just having fun. Jemima’s words remind me that everyone has a place in sports. Whether you’re a star player or just someone who loves the game, there’s a spot for you. And that’s what I want my son to understand—that it’s not about being the best, it’s about enjoying the journey, making memories, and playing on in your own way.

These days, when I watch Alfie, what makes me happiest is seeing him out there, laughing with his friends, learning how to work with others, dealing with his frustrations (the waiting in line is a challenge!) and feeling like he belongs. That’s the real magic of youth sports—the way they bring people together and help us grow in ways that go far beyond the field, mat, mountain or pool.

PLAY ON: For Everyone

So, to all the kids out there—and the parents, coaches, and volunteers cheering them on—PLAY ON. Whether you’re part of a team or competing solo, play because it’s fun, because it makes you feel good, and because it connects you to others. And if you’re not the most coordinated like I was, don’t worry—there’s always a place for you, too. Lace up, jump in, and enjoy the game. The best part is waiting for you, and it’s not just about the score.
